Romance and Reality (2)

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm not quite up to recalling, let alone recounting, the ugly turn that mass tourism in Venice took last weekend (the Venice author and resident Gregory Dowling succinctly presents one part of it here). I'd prefer to remain in denial about the whole thing for a couple of more days. So, for the time being I'll post this more benign jigsaw image of one of the city's canals thick with commerce.

  1. Oh my goodness, it really is turning into Disneyland! Things like that are changing the city we love and respect into .... Disneyland, with a background "Ching" of cash registers! So sad.... makes one feel so guilty to be going there at any time, even with, I hope, the "right" attitudes.

    1. That "ching" has always been important in Venice, Ella, as Shakespeare and many many others have pointed out for centuries. The question for the last couple of centuries, though, has been just how to keep that sound ringing, and (in recent decades) what Venice is willing to sacrifice to do so.
